Lawler's lightsaber Dialogue
During the passage through hypersace to Korriban, Jedi Knight Lawler Twindle called Mandalorian Force-adept Selennin into his quarters and made this proposition:
You should learn the Jedi ways & philosophy even if you choose not to accept them as your own.
I will continue to teach you how we -use- the Force, but I will also teach you what the Force -is-. Your techniques are different from ours, and I can learn from you, too. However, I can make you aware of the most dangerous parts of the Force, particularly when using it in combat.
We are heading to a vast center of corruption in the Force - there will be much temptation to use the power of the Force for personal strength and domination. This must be resisted at all costs, or else this effort will come to nothing, and each of us will be destroyed.
Would you like to learn to use a lightsaber? It will not be easy - we do not distribute them lightly. Much will be required of you, but it will be worth it.
Accepting, training, and using this weapon identifies you with the Jedi order. Those who see you with it will think of the Jedi - either that you are one, or, in grimier circles, that you killed one.
This offer is not meant to coerce you into joining or aligning with the Jedi, but that joining or aligning is somewhat required in order to fully understand how to best weild our weapon and its techniques.
Even the Sith know this - they use a corruption of our techniques to achieve effectiveness with a lightsaber.
You may formally request to be declared a Jedi learner, if you wish. This would certainly be the preference of the council, since it would make your relationship to the Order a bit more usual. Certainly you would not be trained as a normal Padawan, but as a special case learner with a training style that better fits your situation. [OOC: like Luke, and other non-standard learners, etc]
The bad news:
The Jedi do not make way against the Republic, neither do we fight to systain its current form.
We do fight for the ideals of the Republic, and for the defense of its citizens. By empowering us with some authoriy in the Republic, the government realizes that sometimes we will chastise it against its less desirable inclinations.
The Republic is not its ideal, and is at times repulsive. But it is the most effective framework by which to achieve the ideals of protection of the vulnerable, and providing for the common good of all beings. Sometimes bringing about those ideas feels a lot like attacking the Republic itself, but the difference must always be kept in mind.
As a Jedi learner, you must agree to uphold the ideals of the Jedi order - which includes this striving for the ideals of the common good of all beings in the ideals of the Republic.
I know you have your disputes with the Republic, but I cannot contribute to those who wish its violent overthrow. Those who wish its correction, yes, for I'm one of those, but not its overthrow.
Do you agree to these terms?
The good news:
Comes after you agree to the bad news, but keep in mind that all good things ask something of you - and this good thing is worth the bad thing.
if Yes:
<Lawler will break out the training sabers for some practice>

if No: < I presume some sort of entertaining interaction will eventually lead to a yes on the earlier question >
After a few days' practice with the training saber, Lawler sets up a room with several lightsabers laid out on a table - some of them are training sabers, some are masterpieces. Some are just shells nothing inside them. Some belonged to other Jedi, some have never been used.
I have constructed a lightsaber for you. If you choose to join the Jedi and train as one of us, you will be called-upon to construct your own. Until that time, if it ever comes, this will be yours to keep and use. I meditated on your situation and training in the Force as I constructed it. The Force guided me and I believe you will agree that the results are impressive. The Force must intend for you to have a magnificent weapon. Alone, I can not build these this well.
