When Lawler constructed his new lightsaber, he balanced it for throwing. This allows him to make ranged attacks with this weapon, and more easily move it through the air with the Force.

Lawler Twindle is an anomaly in the Jedi order -- having been accepted later into the training system than most children are, and under quite unusual circumstances. In their quest to be thorough in finding young candidates, the Jedi even made sure to visit his far hidden planet, the 4th moon of Tion 5, at least once a year. Each time they came, they found the same strange thing -- an overall increased level of Force flow among the majority of the small population. It was not centered around any one person, nor could any person in the mostly rural, peasant community offer any explanation to the Jedi. Eager to study the phenomenon, but unable to make any headway, they Jedi resigned themselves to keeping a close eye out for opportunities to learn about this mystery.

Story note: Lawler obtained a special lightsaber crystal on his Jedi Trial mission to Illum. From the creatures that protect and care for the crystals in the cave he received an odd crystal that varies color between blue and purple in color. This will vary his saber blade color between deep green and white-green.

Though he doesn't know what effect this crystal will have when placed into his saber, he will eventually discover that the creatures pre-imbued this crystal will an especially powerful attack against dark side users. (+1d6 damage against tainted and dark Force users)

There was nothing particularly special about the boy. He was not particularly tall, or particularly smart, not particularly healthy. He was quiet, but played well with the children. He stayed close to home, obeyed his parents, and was as active in the local religion as a 6 year old could be. He was once interviewed by the Jedi -- at a time when they were trying anything to find the cause of the local Force influx. They found nothing significant about him, and he was not chosen to attend the academy.

Two years later, during one of the annual Jedi visits, they happened to come through his little hamlet again. While they were speaking with village leaders, the cry went up that the library was on fire! The town -- Jedi included, raced to the building to find the small boy Lawler helping the ancient librarian out of the even more ancient building -- both suffering from massive smoke inhalation, and neither one was fit to survive the ordeal. Both the librarian and boy were far beyond the reach of the local medicine, and the Jedi chose not to directly intervene, but to meditate and provide extra urgency to whatever path was the will of the Force. The local townspeople were praying under the direction of their village cleric.

Both Lawler and the old librarian died. The Jedi then watched amazed as the local Force influx intensified around the two and took the remaining Force in the boy and the old man, along with the parts that were being offered by the praying people and meditating Jedi, and poured it back into the small boy. The boy revived - renewed in life signs, breathing, color, but did not awake for several days.

Upon awakening the boy was changed -- the Force seemed to have rebuilt him using attributes from everyone who witnessed his death. He was stronger, and suddenly had knowledge of things he had never seen, could do things he had never done -- including wield the Force with some control!

Intensely curious to learn more of what had happened to the boy, and fearing that if they did not now discipline him in the use of the Force, he could possibly become hazardous to his people -- the Jedi obtained permission from his family to take Lawler to the Academy. He adapted well there to the life of study and meditation -- those seemed to be the only things he wanted to do anyway for the first few years. He read any texts he could get his hands on, and added to the knowledge and wisdom he gained from the old librarian, and his fellow villagers.

Lawler adopted an unusual style of meditation, and from time to time would ask troubling questions about the Force and the philosophy of the Code, however he was so disciplined in his study, meditations, and will for service that the Jedi saw no real harm in his curiosity.

He brought with him several small artifacts from his world, and when questioned about them would only reply that they were "reminders to help him incorporate his old culture into his new life". No one usually questioned him further on these. In fact, since his culture was so unknown to most people, when on diplomatic missions outside the academy, he would sometimes secret away information and useful devices (comlinks, transmission jammers, lock picks, data cards, extra credits) inside various trinkets, and claim they were cultural artifacts in order to avoid searches. This allowed him to gather and carry information between places which otherwise would have been difficult or impossible.

Lawler carries with him an extensible walking stick. Young as he is, his legs become weak from time to time, presumably a contribution of the ancient librarian. Often, he will use it when he feeling just fine to convey a sense of elegance or nobility, not wanting to have it become a signal of when his legs are acting up. The walking stick, when not extended, is shaped like a small sphere perhaps 5 or 6 cm in diameter. It also contains electronics for a chronometer, voice recorder, and a short-range comlink. It can also be used as a pointer (and a not so gentle wake-up call) in teaching situations, and, in a pinch, it's fast thrust when extending can be used as a weapon.

Lawler is not one for fighting, except when there is no other way. He has taken after the Jedi who helped rebuild him -- preferring to use the Force to affect others in combat rather than melee himself. He spends his training efforts learning diplomatic and persuasive techniques so as to better be able to avoid fights altogether. However, if the innocent or weak come under aggression on his watch, then he is quite willing to demonstrate that his lightsaber is not merely another of his decorative artifacts.
